How to establish whether TCAS will be useful for your environment. Get out your workstation and application use inventories.1 Make a list of all applications used and check whether they are supported by either LTSP or Windows application servers.2
Now, here's the important bit. Unless you have extremely good management you will not get permission to make sweeping changes without extensive trials. You probably cannot even get a budget for a Windows application server license. All is not lost. No management support Method
1 Your environment may use different names but what we mean is minimally a list of workstations and a list of applications. Hopefully a list of applications used by each workstation.
Amazingly, some Cape Cod organizations do not have either. Should library patrons or school children be on computers for which no one has a good idea of what they are running? How many town computers 'disappear' every year?
2 Applications should be considered by their purpose not their name. For example Internet Explorer is an application program with browsing as the purpose or application. Many people consider changing to FireFox an upgrade, as it is faster and easier to use for browsing. |
